Artist Profile, Jewelry Artist, Melanie Guerra

Born and raised in Boston, MA, Melanie Guerra began designing jewelry in 1991, as a student at Emerson College. She began creating gifts for friends, eventually selling to friends and interested strangers, quite a few of whom purchased a piece from around Melanie’s neck!

In September of 2001, requests for her pieces became so frequent she formed Dream Big Arts, and began selling her collection of original, one-of-a-kind pieces in shops, galleries, and online. She also did a number of festivals and tremendously successful trunk shows in both private homes and retail stores.

Melanie spent the better part of fifteen years living in the West – Montana, Arizona and Colorado, and found the atmosphere of optimism and the beauty of her surroundings inspiring. She experimented with many aspects of jewelry design and technique, and today she focuses primarily on metal, beadwork and wire work. She has returned to the Boston area with her husband and daughter and is thrilled to be an artist-member of the Dedham Square Artist Guild.

Melanie has taught design and technique classes in Boston and Steamboat Springs. She Co-founded of the Artists' Gallery of Steamboat, and served as Director of Marketing. She was an active member of the Steamboat Springs Arts Council, the Colorado Women's Caucus for Art, the PMC Guild and is a Level II Certified Precious Metal Clay Artisan. She has studied Precious Metal Clay techniques with Colin Buckley and Peggy Houchin. She has also studied raku pottery with Gayla Lemke.

Melanie attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Connoisseurship program, where she earned a certificate in Appraisal Studies, focusing on Fine Art & Antiques. She has also earned the designation of Accredited Jewelry Professional from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in Carlsbad, CA. Her plans include continuing course work there in order to obtain her Graduate Gemologist designation, and one day set up shop as an appraiser of jewelry & antiques.

Melanie will be teaching a precious metal clay class at the Dedham Community House in January  Info Here

Introduction to Precious Metal Clay
January 29, 2013 6:00 pm (2-Class Session)
Make your own fine silver jewelry using the fun medium of Precious Metal Clay! Sculpt, carve, stamp and shape this ingenious clay into pendants, earrings, rings and more! PMC is a mixture of fine silver particles and organic clay material. The clay is shaped into the desired design and fired in a kiln. Upon firing, the organic clay material is burned off, leaving the design in just the precious metal (fine silver). Students will have the opportunity to create a minimum of two pieces that will be fired in between class days and then polished and finished during the last class. Ages 14 and up. Instructor: Melanie Guerra, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Half Day Thursday January 31, 2013 1:00 pm
Learn to make a bowl out of clay using the pinch technique. Add surface elements using the slip and score technique. While you wait for the clay to dry a bit, create a Valentine's Day card to take with you. Finish the bowl with nontoxic paint. The instructor will coat the bowl with a clear glaze and fire. Bowls can be picked up at the Dedham Square Artists Guild but not in time for Valentine's Day gifting. Ages first grade and up. Instructor: Lisa W.B. Walker, Dedham Square Artist Guild

This Saturday Meet Photographer, Alice Donaldson

Ask Alice about her photographic adventures!

Photography is my passion. I love the way light plays on the landscape, and its diversity of textures, shapes and intricacies of the land. My travels have inspired respect and admiration for the beauty and grandeur of this world. The goal is to capture this beauty in photographs, and to evoke various emotions from the onlooker.

My portfolio reflexes my travel thru Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Cape Cod.

I attended New England School of Photography. A member of Dedham Square Artists Guild, and Quincy Art Association. I have participated in the Jamaica Plain Open Studios, The Dedham Open Studios and Bourne Open Studios. I participated in the Quincy Art Affair, for which I won a Blue Ribbon.

My work is shown in The Dedham Square Artist Guild, Dedham; The Karen Rinaldo Gallery, Falmouth, Ma.; Under The Sun,Woods Hole, Ma.; and Uncle Bills Country Store, Falmouth, Ma.

I photograph in hope that people can identify with a place they have dreamed of, perhaps visited, or to inspire there imagination.

New Member, Sue Hoy

“As an artist, I am trying to capture the spirit of my subject by reducing details and concentrating on light and shape. My paintings are rich in color and bold in brushwork. I am inspired by nature’s beauty and the chance to interpret it in simple, yet compelling ways.”

Sue Hoy is a painter, graphic designer and art teacher living in Milton MA. Her inspiration comes from her family and the endless beauty of New England. Choosing subjects that capture attention and emotion, Sue strives to simplify shape and color to reflect the essence of her subject. Her voyage toward simplicity, versus over-working and illustrating with paint, is ongoing. Her paintings have been in numerous shows in Massachusetts and she currently has a solo show at Abby Park in Milton, MA. She teaches painting and clay classes for children in the Milton public schools and at Milton Art Center.

Spreading History, Holiday Ornaments

Guild Member, Lisa Walker shared this story with the Guild.

Lisa creates ornaments every year. A friend of hers inherited pottery and ceramics tools from her grandmother, who was a Dedham resident. Lisa was able to use some of the tools in her own work. In these tools she discovered this snow flake stamp.  When this time of year comes around Lisa makes these creations with the stamp. She spreads the history and sentimental value of this stamp for future generations. It is very sweet to have the Dedham connection as well.

And join us on Sunday December 9th from 1-4pm for a special pottery event with Guild member Lisa.

Birds for a Cure 2012 Series

With the great support for the 2011 Series, Marietta Apollonio was able to donate $350 from her commission on sales to the American Cancer Society.

For the 2012 Series, donations will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

These new birds are variations on last years, done in a different medium and style. She created a block print from rubber for these birds, and using a water-soluble Block Printing Ink, each bird was stamped onto watercolor paper. Color was added using PRISMACOLOR Art Markers. 5×7 matted.
They come in a few different colors (some samples below) and are available for $25 each, starting

Friday November 30, 2012 at the Dedham Square Artist Guild for purchase. 70% from my overall commission from the sales of these birds will be donated.
