Intro. to Oil Painting – Color Theory. A new Class at the Guild

Class Description

This 3-session course will explore the the basics of Oil Painting with materials used in Color Theory. We’ll be working in miniature (2” x 3” or 4” x 6”) as these small, miniature “thumbnail” paintings will assist with shape and color placement, composition layout and establishing the “mood” of the painting. We’ll look at color harmony, warm and cool color palettes, color mixing and choosing the proper colors for a painting. Working in miniature is an excellent teaching method for learning brush control and paving the way for a larger scale painting.

Session 1
Class will open with a discussion / defining of the color-wheel, a beginning artist’s most important tool. We’ll discuss the use of “warm” and “cool” color palettes and begin our painting.

Session 2
Class will continue with a discussion of color mixing and building color harmony within a painting. We’ll continue work on our paintings using techniques discussed in Lessons One and Two.

Session 3
Primary focus of class will be the continuation / finalization of our paintings with a question and answer session to follow.

Instructor Bio
Richard Humphrey, a life-long Dedham resident and self-taught Oil Color Artist since 2003. His approach to each new painting is a welcomed learning experience as it is an opportunity to experience new brushstrokes, create a new color mixture, experience an entirely different was to create “texture.” “Paintings can evoke moods and emotions, and with the proper color combinations and techniques, these results can easily be achieved.” He has participated in two Dedham Open Studios events and currently has work on display at the Dedham Square Artist Guild gallery.
