Sign up Today for my Winter Scenes with Clay Workshop taking place on Thursday, February 28th from 6:30-8PM at the Dedham Community House.

Explore surface decoration in clay using textures and stamps with hand drawn elements using colored slip. Students will work with a slab of high fire clay to create images, their favorite can be molded into a functional piece. I will finish the pieces with a clear glaze and have them available for pick-up at the Dedham Square Artists Guild. Ages 18 and up.

This photo detail is an example of what students will work on. I created this dish with real shells, sea~glass as stamp, and hand drawn fish. In the winter scenes workshop, stamps will reflect the season.

March Classes Taught by Guild Artists

The Dedham Square Artist Guild is pleased to announce that, beginning this winter, a wide variety of art classes will be offered in collaboration with the Dedham Community House (DCH). Classes are held in DCH’s ground floor space and taught by Guild artists. These are classes for March

Visit their website to sign up for classes

Ukranian Egg Workshop 03-02-2013 9:00 am
In this workshop you will learn how to decorate eggs using a wax resist method, similar to batik. Wax is applied to the egg using a stylus called a kistka or with other tools. After each layer of wax is applied, the egg is dyed with progressively darker colors. When the wax is finally melted off the egg you will end up with a beautiful multi-colored egg. Traditional Ukranian and Lithuanian techniques will be taught but you will also be encouraged to experiment with your own designs. Each participant will be able to create 1 - 2 eggs during the class and will go home with instructions and their own kistka and bees wax. Ages 12 and up.
Instructor: Cindy Mootz, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Landscape Painting 03-07-2013 6:00 pm (4-Session Class)
This class is for experienced landscape painters who have been working in oils or acrylic for one year or more. Develop your own skills using your own photographic reference. The focus of the class will be creating a realistic landscape painting, paying attention to composition, technique and how to achieve accurate color (color theory will be discussed). Ages 18 and up. Instructor: Gary Koeppel, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Gelatin Monotype Workshop 03-09-2013 9:00 am
You don't need to be able to draw to make beautiful, one-of-a-kind, multi-layered monotype prints! In this one day workshop we will be using gelatin (yes, the kind you eat!) as our printing surface. Found objects such as plant material, bubble wrap or nearly anything are gently pressed into the inked gelatin plate and then printed onto paper to create a unique design. It is fun, fast paced and nontoxic. Participants should be able to create at least 8 - 10 prints during the workshop. No printmaking experience is necessary and although not necessary, participants are encouraged to bring in objects to use in printing. Ages 12 and up.
Instructor: Cindy Mootz, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Basic Wirework - Bracelets 03-11-2013 6:00 pm
Create a one-of-a-kind bracelet using colorful beads and wire! Learn to create links and clasps, all using cold connections (no soldering). Basic wire working techniques will be covered and students will take home a tool kit for making other projects on their own! One bracelet will be completed during the workshop with the possibility of a second depending upon the student's ability. Ages 16 and up. Instructor: Melanie Guerra, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Kids Earring-Making Workshop 03-20-2013 6:00 pm
Learn to make your very own earrings! We will use simple wire-working techniques to create unique designs. A variety of beads are included but feel free to bring your own special beads if you like! We should be able to create several pairs during the workshop. Ages 8 - 16.

Playing with Clay

Children approach clay in so many different ways. Some jump right in with lots of energy, others drift off into a world of their imagination, some are tentative and enjoy working with another who might provide encouragement. Given the opportunity to play, they find their way and grasp onto some element that gives them joy. They respond to the temperature of the clay, the feel of it, the mess (!) , and the freedom. Thank you to the wonderful creative students I shared my afternoon with on friday at the Dedham Community House teaching hand-building with clay. By Lisa Walker

More photos tomorrow....
