Upon firing, the organic clay material is burned off, leaving the design in just the precious metal (fine silver). Students will have the opportunity to create a minimum of two pieces that will be fired in between class days and then polished and finished during the last class. Ages 14 and up.
Instructor: Melanie Guerra, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Carved Tile Workshop— 5/15/13 6:30pm - 9:30pm
Carved tiles are a wonderful way to achieve multi-textural depth and dimension. During this class participants will be using white sculpture clay to carve tiles. Tiles will be approximately 4 x 4 in dimension. It is *strongly* recommended participants save valuable time during the workshop by planning ahead and bring project ideas, including photo copies of images of interest. The instructor will provide limited carving tools but you can bring your favorites as well. The cost of the class in for ONE tile - students choose one color for glaze and the instructor will glaze, fire and return tiles within 4 to 6 weeks form the class.

Introducing Glass Artist, Kevin Becker

Kevin Becker, Glassblower

I have worked for over 20 years as a psychologist specializing in trauma and disaster. My work has taken me around the world to support victims and survivors of some of history’s worst tragedies and I have worked with countless individuals whose tragedies were personal and private in nature but no less traumatic.  Until I took a weekend glassblowing class, simply out of curiosity, I never considered myself at all creative or artistic.  But I was immediately hooked! And now several years later, glassblowing still serves as a therapeutic respite from the suffering I see on a regular basis.   The focus needed to create objects from molten glass in the heat of the hot shop takes me completely out of myself.  When a useful or attractive object results, it’s even more exciting and rewarding.

My work is frequently focused on exploring the behavior of colors as they interact to create images in the heat of the 2200 degree furnace.  Shaping and creating either familiar or abstract images with molten, moving glass, the consistency of honey, is a challenge I find extremely rewarding with endless possibilities.  The glass often seems to have a mind of its own, and reaching an acceptable compromise is the glassblowers’ cherished duty.

Kevin's work will be in the Dedham Guild this week

Learning a New Way to Create

Last Saturday, Cindy Mootz held her mono-type class at Dedham Community House. She had very excited students who wanted to learn this technique of making prints.

Cindy showed them how to use materials to make patterns, mix the paints and use the gelatin blocks. One of the fun things you can use leaves, bubble wrap. plastic netting or just about anything else.

Each creation was a sort of surprise. It was fun to watch the students discover their artworks. If it didn't work out it was easy to make a new one. It took them practice to discover what they liked best.

Look for a student/teacher show of the work at Mocha Java in Dedham Square coming up soon
Cindy will be teaching another class on mono printing. Stay tuned and check our website

Winter Scenes – Adult Workshop (Part One)

Tree branches, pine cones, stamps and colored slip – all materials used in my Winter Scenes Clay Workshop that took place at Dedham Community House last night. In a collaboration between Dedham Square Artist Guild and DCH, artist members host classes and share their skills with Dedham residents. My class was action packed: painting, rolling, stamping and throwing the clay! to manipulate the surface. Students enjoyed the process and created a beautiful one of a kind functional piece … more pictures in part two…

March Artist of the Month, Nicholas Conte

Join us on Friday March 8th from 5-9pm for an opening reception for our March Artist of the Month show, featuring black and white photographer Nicholas Conte.

"Dedham At Night"

Nicholas is a Dedham resident and member of the Dedham Square Artist Guild. Working exclusively in black and white, primarily using an Olympus OM-10 camera and Ilford FP4 35mm film, he develops his own film and prints the images in his basement darkroom. Nick has been taking pictures since he was 8, when his parents bought him his first camera, a Kodak Ektralite that took 110 film (and 'arty' pictures of his stuffed animals). He's been a bit more serious about it for the past 15 years, and finds inspiration in the moment.
