Here is the story of my piece….
I grew up on an peninsula of land north of Boston and as an adult, I spend most summer weekends at the beach either south of Boston or in southern Rhode Island.  Water is part of my life. I enjoy watching the waves, the sunsets over the water, boats, and exploring the beach.  Collecting sea glass is one of my favorite things to do.

I wanted to make a piece that would hold the sea glass I collect, remind me of the lighthouses that I love, give the illusion of rocking like a boat in the water, and incorporate the movement of a wave.

trimming to create the desired effects: reference to light house shape and illusion of rocking movement.

complete!
This is a one of a kind piece. It will be part of a bigger exhibit that opens this Thursday, September 26th at the Dedham Community Theater.  Immediately following the reception, my piece will be moved to the Dedham Square Artist Guild Gallery across the street from the Theater where it will be on display and for sale with the other three dimensional artwork. Two dimensional work will remain at the Theater for the duration of the exhibit.

Gelatin Monotype Workshop

Gelatin Monotype Workshop
Saturday, November 2, 2013
9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Members: $45 • Non-Members: $55
Materials: $10 due to the instructor at class.

Class to be held at Dedham Community House

You don’t need to be able to draw to make beautiful, one-of-a-kind, multi-layered
monotype prints! In this one day workshop we will be using gelatin (yes, the kind you eat!) as our printing surface. Found objects such as plant material, bubble wrap or nearly anything are gently pressed into the inked gelatin plate and then printed onto paper to create a unique design. It is fun, fast paced and nontoxic. Participants should be able to create at least 8 - 10 prints during the workshop.

No printmaking experience is necessary and although not necessary,
participants are encouraged to bring in objects to use in printing. Ages 12 and up.

Instructor: Cindy Mootz, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Celebrating International Dot Day at the Dedham Guild

Dot by Kerry Hawkins
In celebration of International Dot Day the Guild will be showing artist's work with a dot theme. It will be displayed at the Gallery for about two weeks from September 15 until the end of the month. Stop by and see what our artists have come up with, all inspired by Dot day and the The Dot book.

The Guild and Catching Joy is celebration of the 10th Anniversary of Peter H. Reynold's book "The Dot" and non-profit Catching Joy's 5th Anniversary, Catching Joy is leading kids and adults making dot pictures and then turning the artwork into cards. Catching Joy will deliver the cards to nursing homes, shelter homes and various charities to bring joy to others"

The cards will be displayed in the Guild and at Mocha Java in honor of the International dot day. We are honored and thrilled to work with the Catching Joy organization.

  • Catching Joy is a 501c3 non-profit that promotes volunteerism beginning with young children and their families. We organize hands-on community service projects that kids can do to let them feel the joy of giving. For more information, see www.catchingjoy.org.

Clay Class for Kids: Halloween, at Dedham Community House

Clay Class for Kids: Halloween - October 2013

Monday; 10/7/13 3:15 - 4:15 pm
Members: $25 Non-Members: $30
Materials: $5 due to the instructor at class.

If your child is interested in learning the basics of pottery this class is a great way to try it out. Each student will create a hand-built item from a pound of clay. The finished work will be left with instructor to apply clear glaze and fire it in a kiln. Instructor will contact families when art is ready for pick up. Ages 6 through 5th grade.

Instructor: Lisa Walker, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Over the weekend at the Dedham Community House Open House, I demonstrated some of the techniques students will learn at a season class. Playing around with some ideas for the Halloween class, I used a sun catcher of a cat as a stamp. Sharing art history or a literary connection with students is a component of my class. The black cat was an image used frequently during the Art Nouveau period by an artist named Theophile Alexandre Steinlein (poster image).

Some techniques students will learn -

  1. using stamps for imprinting,
  2. carving to take away clay,
  3. drawing from their own imagination.
  4. rolling coils
  5. pinching
  6. score and slip method for adding class

We may use some non toxic paints
Instructor will clear coat the finished piece and contact students when ready for pick up.

Lisa Walker is offering three seasonal one hour classes to try clay out for elementary aged students.
Older students who are looking for more, have a look at her commemorative tile 4 week class offered on thursday nights. Link here

Each clay class will be different, so signing up for multiple months means more time to learn and play with clay!

New Classes Announced

The Guild offers a wide variety of art classes and workshops taught by our artist members, in collaboration with the Dedham Community House.

The Dedham Community Association, better known as the Dedham Community House (DCH), was founded in 1922 when Charles J. Kimball and a group of civic-minded citizens purchased an estate originally built by Judge Samuel Haven at the corner of Ames and High Streets in Dedham. The purpose in forming this charitable, nonprofit association was twofold: to preserve the historic mansion built in the Bulfinch design in 1795, and to provide a recreational center for the people of Dedham and the vicinity.
