Relief printing involves carving a design into the surface of a block, keeping in mind which areas of the block will print onto paper. The printing parts remain level with the surface, while the non-printing parts (what will not print on the paper) are removed. The surface is covered with ink by rolling over the raised portions of the block with an ink-covered roller (brayer). We will be using the block printing technique (like stamping) for transferring your creation to paper. In this class you will have one small practice carving block and one larger block to create your final piece. Instructor: Marietta Apollonio, Dedham Square Artist Guild

Food and Pottery at the Dedham Farmers Market By Lisa W.B. Walker

Today marks the last day of the season for the Dedham Farmers Market. Almost every week, I have arrived at the farmers market as the farmers were unpacking their seasonal varieties. I set up the tent for the Dedham Square Artist Guild to showcase and sell art bylocal artists, including myself.

In celebration of the changing season, not the end of the season, one must return to the kitchen to eat and serve anew.

My spoon rests come in handy when making soup. Here is a new recipe I cooked up yesterday using seasonal local veggies (plus sausage from my powisset pork share*)
Portuguese Potato and Kale Soup – serves 8
recipe from Eating Local, The Cookbook Inspired by American Farmers
3/4 lb kale, center rib removed
1/4 cup olive oil
1 onion, minced
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 1/2 lbs potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1 Tablespoon Kosher Salt
2 quarts water
fresh ground pepper
sausage (*)
1. Slice kale leaves into strips of ribbons – no more than 2 inches long.
2. Heat olive oil in a stock pot over moderate heat. Add onions and garlic – saute about 10 minutes until softened. Add potatoes, salt and water. Bring to a simmer, cover partially and cook until potatoes are tender…about 30 minutes.
3. With a wooden spoon, mash potatoes against the side of the pot to crush.
4. Stir in kale and black pepper. Simmer gently, uncovered until kale is tender (10-15 minutes).
*5. I recently purchased a pork share and at this time, I rolled my local sausage into golf ball sized meatballs, added them to a medium oiled pan and cooked them until just done.
6. Ladle soup into handmade pottery bowls, please. Add 2 sausage meatballs to the top of each soup and serve immediately.

The two bowls are wheel thrown and hand trimmed on the potters wheel. They hold 1 1/2 cups and are part of my dark blue prelude collection. They are dishwasher and microwave safe; however, hand washing allows for a more personal relationship between the user and art.
A quote from the cookbook about this soup: “If Portugal has a national soup, it is this one, known as caldo verde, a rustic and rib sticking meal in a bowl. … The name caldo verde – literally, “green brith” reflects the abundance of kale in the pot.”

Seeing new colors and textures, working with my hands, creating … food and pottery share so many of these things.
The Dedham Farmers Market may be closing for the season, but the Dedham Square Artist Guild is ramping up for the holiday selling season. Purchasing local art is a great way to support local artists and give a one of a kind gift to that special someone in your life this holiday season.

Introducing New Member, Natalya Kuzmicheva of the Republic of Art

How long have you been doing your art?
I have been doing my art of silk scarves since 1992 to thisday.

Why did you decide to concentrate on Fabrics?
I decided to concentrate on fabrics because I wanted to create a new fashion line in the womens' wardrobe.

What do you call your process?
I use the method of cold batic.

What do you like most about working with Fabric?
We like most  that the silk maintains bright colors
the longest of all art materials.

Do you paint more than scarfs? if so what kind of items you work on?
We also make silk tunics, blouses, and skirts.

What inspires you?
My  inspiration  comes from everyday life; our lives, our  emotions, and nature. When you paint a silk scarf, you express yourself and everything around you. Every  scarf  is unique in its own way.

Mom and Me … A Table Shared by Lisa Walker

As a member of the not for profit pottery school and cooperative studio, Potters Placelocated in Walpole, MA, I take part in bi-annual open studios. These events include a theme and this fall it is "A Table Shared".

I often find that my seasonal collection will grow from the theme of the Potters Place Show. This season the theme has taken me in many different directions... starting with the memories of a table shared with my children when they were young called "Mom and Me".

"Mom and Me" are Polka Dot Mugs and Bowls in fun colorful combinations. A table shared with a toddler is fun but tiring and sometimes requires a big cup of coffee, lots of cheerios and much play.

Polka dots in my work are always a reference to my daughter because of her playful nature and the joy that she brings to my life.

This is a limited, “small batch” collection. Each mug is priced based on the ounces it holds. Bowls and Mugs are one of a kind wheel thrown works of art that are both dishwasher and microwave safe, but a joy to hand wash. Pottery from the “mom and Me” collection will make the perfect baby gift, shower present, or just for me gift.

“Mom and Me” will be delivered and for sale at the Dedham Square Artist Guild starting this Sunday, October 20th.

Join us on Saturday October 5th from 6pm to 8pm for an opening for our October Artist of the Month show, featuring artist Cindy Mootz.

In planning this exhibit, I decided to combine my love of animals with my love of art. I've been an “animal person” my whole life and enjoy using animals as subject matter in my artwork. Many of my pieces have a whimsical aspect to them, which I hope make people smile! I will donate 25% of the proceeds from this exhibit to the Animal Rescue League of Boston's Dedham Shelter. I have two rescue cats and feel that the work they do is so very important
