OLIVER — Call to Artists

OLIVER — Call to Artists

A special exhibition hosted at the Dedham Community Theatre
Opening Reception: Thursday March 3rd, 6pm to 8pm

Exhibition Dates: March 3, 2016 to April 30, 2016

Opening Reception: March 3, 6pm to 8pm

What does grit look like … courage, bravery, strength of character? We’re paying tribute to Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist in conjunction with the Parish Players production of OLIVER! Dickens sets the innocence of childhood against the squalor and corruption of the city. He showed us what grit meant to him in his novel. We challenge you to define grit in your art… in a portrait of a hard scrabble city dweller? In the stark landscape of urban industrialism? Show us!

This show will be hosted in the lower gallery at the Dedham Community Theatre! 580 High Street, Dedham, MA. http://www.dedhamcommunitytheatre.com

Cost for entry is $25, payable via credit card through link below. Download Prospectus and read thoroughly before applying. Entry deadline is February 12, 2016.

Guild Members may enter at no cost, but must email dedhamguild.submissions@gmail.com with intent to show. High School art students may also enter at no charge, but must also email dedhamguild.submissions@gmail.com with intent to show as well as jpgs of work per Prospectus.

About the Artist
Art is my passion. It has always been part of my life in some way. I grew up in Arlington, VA and was fortunate to have access to many wonderful free art museums in the D.C. Area. Although my parents were not very educated about art, they felt it was important to expose us to it's many forms. Art was always my favorite class in school, but when I thought about choosing a career, I decided I wanted to keep my art as something I loved to do instead of making it something a HAD to do. Throughout my career as an occupational therapist, art continued to be my creative outlet. I first started getting serious about my art when I took a watercolor class at the Brookline Arts Center about 20 years ago. I still love watercolor and also have dabbled in oil and acrylic, but much of my recent work has focused on creating monotypes. I was introduced to the technique about 12 years ago by Gema Phillips, a Brookline artist, with whom I still work. Monotype printing is a process that produces one unique print at a time. The possibilities with the technique are endless and am always surprised by the results! I love playing with composition and color and use the world around me as my inspiration. I belong to both the Dedham and West Roxbury Art Associations and the Monotype Guild of New England.

I've exhibited frequently in the area over the past several years and am happy to have been part of the first Dedham Open Studios.

December Artists of the Month opening Reception Friday December 11th, 6-8pm

DECEMBER ARTISTS OF THE MONTH
GARY KOEPPEL & BARBARA TRAINER
Opening Reception
Friday December 11th, 6-8pm

Gary Koeppel — Painter
The elements that attract me to a scene have to do with composition, color, contrasts of light and dark. In addition to on site (Plein Air) painting I have been working on larger studio pieces from photographic reference of interesting compositions and lighting. Working in this controlled environment affords me the luxury of time to work larger and push the image in a slightly different and compelling direction.

Barbara Trainer — Jewelry Artist
Barbara began jewelry designing in 2007 as another creative outlet in her life. Her career as a certified landscape designer led to her interest in other kinds of design. With a background in needle and fabric crafts, she started working with jewelry components such as hand-blown imported glass, sterling silver, other metals and many other unusual, eclectic materials. Her pieces are meant to catch and reflect light and color in a delicate interplay. And she strives to create necklaces and earrings of unique textures and forms.

This Saturday see Dedham Art Association at the Dedham Guild

Join us for a trunk show on Saturday December 5, 1-5pm

About the Artists:

Barbara Reynolds
"Barbara has spent the better part of her life in apparel design, for Carter's when that company was in Needham, and as a freelance designer after Carter's left the area. In more recent years, Barbara and her business partner designed home furnishings textile prints. After retirement last year, she began focusing on watercolor painting for creative expression. Barbara lives in Dedham with her handler, Fenway the Dachshund. "

Catherine Perrone
“This collection of Catherine Perrone’s paintings evoke a sense of expectation and wonder at the world around us. She wants you to sense the calm of a snowy winter morning, experience the tense stillness of a massive buck surprised in the forest, and stand in awe of the forces of wind and austere conditions which shaped the gnarled old canyon tree. The artist employs rich colors and sinewy lines to capture the delicate petals of spring flowers. She wants your mind to wander into the scene of sailboats waiting patiently for their captain to glide through summer days. Her work is influenced by Andrew Wyeth’s emotional narrative, the serenity of Emil Carlson’s paintings and especially by the master of watercolor, John Singer Sargent.

Catherine earned her MBA and worked in Information Technology as a project manager for the DuPont company and Accenture. She has studied painting independently and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She is currently a member of the Dedham Art Association and the Needham Art Association. She lives in Westwood, Massachusetts.”

About the artist:

About the Artist:

Inspired by the beauty of the islands, the designs for her jewelry art collection incorporate gemstones, freshwater pearls and assorted new and repurposed items. Turkish Paper Marbling Demonstration at Dedham Square Artist Guild

Turkish Paper Marbling Demo
Wednesday, September 16th 1pm to 6:30pm for a FREE demonstration by John C. Bielik.

Paper marbling is the art or process of staining paper with paint or ink. Turkish marbling uses
finely ground pigments in water as its paint. A strong association exists between books and
marbling, due to the long history they share. Many historical pattern examples survive today
because of the protection afforded between the covers of old books.

About the Artist - John C. Bielik is an itinerant artisan, instructor, and historic trades interpreter. Creative influences have been through experiences as a teacher, student, graphic designer, and artist. John combines these experiences with an interest in history and the historic trades of papermaking, bookbinding, and paper marbling. John's paper and products are featured in the shops at Colonial Williamsburg, as well as other retail venues. John is from Shelbyville, Missouri, He will be demonstrating in Dedham at the Guild and then the Big E.

** Please note this event will be held outside in front of the Guild, weather permitting. Please check our facebook page for updates.

Opening Reception, Matt Miller, Faces

Join us on Friday September 11 from 6pm to 8pm for an opening
reception for Guild Artist of the Month, Matt Miller.

Matt Miller started drawing at an early age and was often seen with pencil, pen, or charcoal in hand. He took several drawing classes at this time, however as he grew and adulthood came upon him, a long hiatus in his art took place. Later, as an accomplished adult, he took up drawing and oil painting with renewed zeal, studying with several skilled local artists, taking classes at a number of local studios and the Rhode Island School of Design. He came across the artwork of David Leffel and became heavily influenced by his work, working with and attending numerous training sessions over the next few years with Mr. Leffel and his wife Sherrie McGraw in California and in Taos NM.

FACES
I have always been fascinated by people. I started drawing and painting
people when I was about 12. And as much as I love still life painting,
I always come back to painting people. In particular I am fascinated by
people's faces, their expressions, the glint in their eyes, and the
experiences expressed by the wear of weather and etched line. I am
blessed to have worked with a master painter to help realize the skills
necessary to share my vision with you. - Matt Miller

The Guild welcomes Sandrine Colson-Inam, Jewelry

I am originally from Provence, France and a world traveler. I have visited many countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe and lived in various parts of France, from Provence to Paris and the USA. All these experiences influence my work in many ways. My jewelry designs are exhibited in many craft shows and open studios as well as galleries or shops of the New England area. I am also a painter and mixed media artist (www.artofheart.com). I now reside in Boston (MA) and my studio is based in West Concord (MA).

Jewelry caught my interest many years ago and the vast majority of my jewelry creations are one of a kind. I’m always experimenting with new techniques and materials so my jewelry designs exhibit a wide variety of styles. Abstraction, materials, texture and colors are the inspiration for my work. I enjoy working with metal wire, glass beads, gemstones and pearls as well as polymer clay, enamel or other contemporary style painting. I draw further inspiration from the organized chaos of nature or art forms. Works come together on my bench as elements find each other through planning or improvisation due to their proximity, association or chance. I occasionally work with recycled objects such as discarded jewelry, stone pieces or chips, sea glass pieces, crystal elements from chandeliers, and more. I am inclined to produce asymmetric or symmetric pieces that are highly stylized, despite the unstructured nature of some of these elements, resulting in what I call organized chaos with an intent, creating wearable art.

“Art is the expression of one’s inner self. It represents what is, has been, will be, or is worth arguing or representing.”

Artist Reception: Tsun Ming Chmielinski, Mystical Places

Join us Thursday August 13, 6:00 - 8:00pm for an Artist Reception: Tsun Ming Chmielinski, Mystical Places

I am always attracted to simple and powerful landscapes whether in my own backyard or faraway places. This inspires me to create my "Mystical Places" landscape paintings.

Tsun Ming Chmielinski paints in Sumi-e, Pastel and Acrylic. Her painting is a true expression of her cross cultural background. Born in China and raised by Buddhist parents; Tsun Ming learned painting from a Zen Master. Her education and experience in Hong Kong and the United States have provided for her a balance of East and West.

When our Artists Travel, Photographer, Alice Donaldson goes to England

'Dover Castle's', location, commanding the shortest sea crossing between England and the Continent,
has given it immense strategic importance. The chalk of Castle Hill has been shaped and reshaped over the centuries into massive earthworks, ditches and mounds. Imposing walls and towers have been raised and networks of tunnels built beneath them. Henry II began the building of the present castle in the 1180's, and over the next 800 years its buildings and defenses where adapted to meet the changing demands of weapons and warfare.

'Man O' War' cove is located on the English Channel, on the Jurassic Coast of England. This stretch of coast was formed by the uplifting of continents, million of years ago.

On the Thames River: This photo was taken on the 4th of July. We 'silently' celebrated, amongst ourselves. What better photo to take than 'Big Ben' (names for the Bell) and Parliament.

GARY KOEPPEL Artist Reception Saturday, July25th — 5 pm to7 pm

GARY KOEPPEL
Artist Reception
Saturday, July25th—5pm to7 pm

ExhibitionDates:
Location: Isabella Restaurant, Dedham Square

Join us for an artist reception featuring works by Roslindale artist and Dedham Square Artist Guild member, Gary Koeppel. Hosted by Isabella Restaurant as part of their Art At Isabella series, this show will feature select pieces of landscape works by Gary.

Between 5pm and 7pm on Saturday, July 25th, reception guests will enjoy a complimentary wine tasting, featuring wines from Class Wine Co., as well as hors d'oeuvres provided by Isabella Restaurant.

About the Artist:

The elements that attract me to a scene have to do with composition, color, contrasts of light and dark. When I paint a tree in a field the tree becomes secondary to describing the space around it.

In addition to on site (Plein Air) painting, I have been working on larger studio pieces from photographic reference of interesting compositions and lighting. Working in this controlled environment affords me the luxury of time to work larger and push the image in a slightly different and compelling direction.

Painting landscapes is something that I enjoy doing, something that I have taken with me through the journey of my life over the past thirty years. What is it that attracts me to the landscape? I suppose it’s a place of being for us all, our connection to the land, giving us a sense of place on this planet.
About Isabella Restaurant:

“Monet's "The Garden at Giverny", Audubon's botanical prints, Van Gogh's "Irises", all represent the artist view of Gardens using brush, color and line to create their images. A garden can be a spiritual place where the connection with Mother Earth is important. Show us how gardens inspire your work."
Please join the artists, their friends and families in the lower level of the Dedham Community Theatre, 580 High Street, Dedham, MA for the opening reception of Gardens, A Dedham Square Artist Challenge Exhibition on Thursday, July 9th from 6-8pm.

July Artist of the Month, Gretje Ferguson

Join us on Saturday July 18th from 6pm to 8pm for an artist reception featuring work by our Artist of the Month, Dedham photographer Gretje Ferguson.

Animals with Attitude will feature photography of animals and birds from Massachusetts as well as from the artists travels in New Zealand and Florida.

"While I have been known primarily as a “people photographer, ” my vision is continually expanding to include more of the world around me. When I pick up a camera, ordinary objects become extraordinary. Nothing escapes my lens, whether it’s a fur seal in New Zealand, a blooming amaryllis, or a shower curtain at my daughter’s home. In my recent personal work, I seek to document my surroundings in new and surprising ways."
